The Surf camp

Surf Camp Sri Lanka ofers an all-inclusive surf experience, based in the relaxed fishing village of Arugam Bay, on Sri Lanka's eastern coast.

Arugam Bay's small size, remote location, and diverse community, plus some of the friendliest locals you'll ever meet, ensure that you'll get an authentic taste of the laid-back Sri Lankan coastal village life.

Arugam Bay's biggest attractions are the incredible surf spots and stunning stretches of white sand beaches, gaining it international recognition as a premier surfing destination. Arugam Bay Main Point is touted as the best surf spot in Asia, hosting the UK Pro Tour and the international World Qualifying Series.

Several point break surf spots are also easily accessible, all of which have a sandy bottom and shallow water ideal for beginner surfers. The surf season runs from April to October with high tourism season from July to September. Temperatures hover around 30-36 degrees Celsius and the weather is sunny aside from occasional evening rain showers lasting less than an hour.

There are many restaurants and bars in the village where you can relax and meet other travelers. If you want a break from surfing, swimming, and sunbathing, you can explore the villages and rice paddies by bicycle, enjoy fresh seafood, visit three-thousand-year-old temples, relax with an Ayurvedic massage, or go on a jungle safari or canoe safari to see elephants, crocodiles, peacocks, and other wildlife. About 45 minutes away is Yala East National Park, one of the best places in the world to see wild leopards.

Arugam Bay is truly a stunningly beautiful, unique, charming, and authentic destination with about 800 families of Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus live together peacefully. The people here will make you feel at home and you will find it difficult to leave! Visit now while the village still remains relatively untouched by tourism.

Surf school

The surf school usually holds beginner classes at Baby Point, just 5 minutes walk from the surf camp. But lessons can also be taught at 4 other surf spots, all accessible by a fifteen minute tuk tuk ride through the natural beauty and traditional rice paddies that define this area.

The instructors will choose the location depending on the weather and the wave size. Another major factor the instructors will consider is how crowded the spot will be with other surfers. A quieter point ensures a safe and fun learning environment for everyone.

All instructors are certified by the ISA (International Surfing Association) and are Arugam Bay natives who have been surfing in the area since childhood, and they are also some of Sri Lanka's top surfers.

A maximum class size of two students per instructor means you'll receive plenty of personal attention and the lesson will be tailored to your level. By the end of one week, we guarantee you'll have all the skills and knowledge you need to surf independently, without an instructor, and be a real surfer!

The following is included in the surf school package:

  • Airport pick-up and drop-off in Colombo
  • Accommodation - Standard or upgraded
  • Breakfast
  • 2 x 1.5 hours surf lessons every day of your stay (mornings from 7 am-10am and evenings from 3pm-6pm)
  • 1 ISA-certified instructor per max. 2 students
  • All surf equipment needed
  • Transport to and from the surf spots by tuk-tuk

The instructors are also happy to help you arrange other activities, such as day trips, community visits, and safaris.

If you have arranged your own accommodation, you can book surf lessons only, which includes surf tuition, all equipment needed, and transport to and from surf spots.

Surfari

Surfari is a great option for more experienced surfers. Every day there is a different swell, a different wind etc. This doesn't matter if you book a surfari with us. Every day you will be transported to the best wave of the day, suiting your surf level.

You will be accompanied by professional local surf guides. They will tell you all about the spots, how to get in and out, the currents, type of wave, etc. They will also give you feedback on how to improve your surfing skills.

Within a 10 km radius of Arugum Bay, there are 8 easily accessible point break surf spots suitable for experienced and intermediate surfers. All of these breaks have a sandy bottom and shallow water.

Having a number of breaks that suit every weather condition has gained Arugam Bay it's international reputation as a premier surfing destination. Experienced surfers return year after year to enjoy all of the breaks, particularly the more advanced breaks at Main Point and Okanda - the best surf spots in Asia.

The following is included in the surfari package:

  • Airport pick-up and drop-off in Colombo
  • Accommodation - Standard or upgraded
  • Breakfast
  • Surfaris with a local guide every day our your stay (surf equipment not included)
  • Transport to and from the surf spots by tuk-tuk

You are also welcome to rent the surf camp boards for a small charge, however as an experienced surfer, you are encouraged to bring your own board.

Accommodation

The accommodation we offer is a charming beachfront villa. It is located on a gorgeous and secluded beach lined with palm trees and dotted with colorful, wooden fishing boats. Here you are totally free to do anything you want, have a fire on the beach, hang a hammock between the palm trees, or enjoy a drink of the local liquor, arrack, made from coconut palm trees.

The villa is located about 500m from the main part of town where there are a variety of restaurants, shops, bars, and other amenities. There are free bicycles at the beach villa for you to use to explore the town and the surrounding area. There are also plenty of tuk tuks you can hire to take you anywhere you want to go.

Depending on your preferences we can offer you two different types of accommodation: standard or upgraded.

Standard accommodation is a shared compartment, meaning that if you are traveling alone you will probably share a room with other surfers, but if you are traveling in a group of two or three people you can get an own room for your group. Each room has 2-3 single beds and an attached bathroom for you to share with your roommates. The rooms are equipped with a ceiling fan and are designed to maximize the cool breeze from the ocean. You can pay a small charge of 1 Euro per day to access the wi-fi network.

The upgraded accommodation is located on the same premises as the standard accommodation but offers more privacy, ideal for couples. If you book upgraded accommodation you will get a private double room with ensuite bathroom and Air-Condition. Your accommodation also includes free access to the wi-fi network.

The beach villa is a perfect place to hang out with other surfers and experience the ambience and tranquility of the local beach lifestyle. Behind the villa is a large organic garden where you can pick fresh vegetables to use for cooking in the kitchen. If you are interested, we can arrange for you to visit an organic garden in the local community. You can meet the villagers, talk with them about their gardening and growing techniques, see how they live, learn about organic food and traditional Sri Lankan cooking, and enjoy an organic lunch with the local people.

If you, or someone in your party, don't plan to surf, you can choose 'Accommodation only', which includes accommodation and breakfast.

Arrival

Arrival to the area is usually with airplane to Negombo airport (airport code: CMB), which is located 35km from Colombo.

When you arrive at the airport a dedicated driver will meet you and give you a ride to the surf camp by air-conditioned private taxi. The drive usually takes 5-6 hours, but could be shorter depending on traffic and weather conditions and at what time of day or night you arrive. Upon departure you will get a ride back to the airport.

You will travel across the island from the west coast to east coast, so along the way you can see a lot of the inland country, such as the beautiful mountains and tea plantations. We will drive through Udawalawe National Park, where you might even see a wild elephant only one meter away from you.
