The Surf camp

Surf camp Andalucia is located in the lovely village of Conil de la Frontera, in the Cadiz region along the Costa de la Luz, in the South West of Spain.

The region receives a consistent Atlantic Swell and is a suitable surfing destination for both beginners and advanced surfers. One of the key benefits with this surfing destination is that it receives more than 3000 hours of sunshine per year and at the same time it is fairly uncrowded.

Another benefit is that the area offers surfing at remote, widespread beaches with white sand and crystal clear water, unusual at other European surfing destinations. The exotic and remote atmosphere sometimes makes you feel like you are not in Europe at all.

Conil is a typical Andalusian village, where the Arab influence has left its mark in its narrow streets, low houses by white walls, patios and small squares. It is a popular getaway destination for the Spanish people, which give you a good opportunity to experience the true side of Spain. As fishing has played a major role in the history of this village for centuries you will find some of the most delectable fish restaurants with very reasonable prices. If you are staying here during the summer months you can also enjoy a very vibrant nightlife. The staff at the camp will make sure you get integrated in the local community by introducing you to the town and culture.

A short walk from the accomodation will take you down to the beach Los Bateles, where most surf lessons take place. Just a 10 min drive from the surf camp is the beach of El Palmar. This is considered to be one of the most beautiful surf beaches in Europe, but it is still an unexploited area.

If you are into exploring the area further it is only a short drive to go clubbing in the city of Cadiz, tasting some Sherry in a bodega in Jerez or mingling with the apes in Gibraltar.

Andalucia has a hot Mediterranean climate with consistent sunshine and very little rain. In the summer months (July, August and September) the air temperature usually stays between 25 degrees C and 32degrees C, in the winter months (December, January & February) it is colder (around 15 degrees C) and in the spring and autumn the temperatures stays around 20 degrees C.

During the high season months of June - September we can only accept bookings for full weeks, with arrivals/departures on Sundays.

Surf school

The surf school is also completely mobile meaning that lessons can be hold at the most suitable beginner wave in the area, depending on daily weather conditions. The lessons usually takes place at the beautiful beaches Los Bateles, situated in front of the village, or El Palmar, a 10 min drive from the surf camp.

All instructors are qualified surf coaches by FES and BSA standards, as well as life guards that provide you with the highest level of surf training along with yoga for surfing and expert nutrition advice. The instructors all speak English, German and Spanish at conversational level.

We guarantee that after one week of surf school the complete beginner will be able to surf and the experienced surfer will have improved greatly.

The following is included in the surf school package:

  • Accommodation in an apartment in the centre of the village
  • Transport to and from the beach
  • 2 hours surf school, five days per week (monday to friday)
  • Free use of surf equipment every day after surf lessons
  • Yoga for surfing
  • Video analysis of your progress
  • Visit to a professional surfboard factory

If you have arranged your own accommodation, you can also book surf school only. We reccomend booking this for 5 days, to get a chance to really learn to surf.

The camp also provides yoga classes that can be added once you arrive. This will enhance your week to also include 5 morning yoga sessions (45 min) and 2 night ashtanga yoga classes (90min).

Surfari is a great option for experienced surfers. Every day there is a different swell, a different wind etc. This doesn't matter if you book a Surfari with us. Every day you will be accompanied by a professional local surf guide who will show you the best breaks of the region.

Besides beautiful, uncrowded beaches the area also has some surf spots mainly suitable for experienced surfers, including the right-hand point break of El Castillo and the left-hand reef break of Canos de la Meca.

To make sure that surfari participants always get their moneys worth, surfari bookings are only possible in the winter months (November to May) when the swell is big. To make the camp able to arrange a guide for the whole day, you also need to be a group of minimum 4 people to make a surfari booking.

The following is included in the surfari package:

  • Accommodation in an apartment in the centre of the village
  • Transport to and from the best breaks of the day
  • Local surf guiding five days per week (surf board hire not included)
  • Yoga for surfing
  • Visit to a professional surfboard factory

The accommodation we offer is apartments located in central Conil de la Frontera, within walking distance to the beach. You might share your apartment with other surfers, living together in a very familiar atmosphere.

The apartment consists of rooms with 1-3 beds, meaning that if you are traveling alone you will probably share a room with other surfers but if you are traveling in group of two or three people you can get your own room. There are also some rooms with double beds for couples. All rooms have shared bathrooms.

The apartment has a shared living room with TV and DVD, as well as a kichen for all guests to use. Meals are not included in the standard packages but breakfast, beach snack and dinner is optionally available at the surf camp for an afordable price. You can use the kithcen to cook yoursef or eat at some of the nice restaruants within walking distance from the surf camp.

If you, or someone in your party, don't plan to surf, you can choose 'Accommodation only', which includes accommodation and breakfast.

To make sure you get an extraordinary time and a lot of surfing experience the camp only host 10 people a week, so don't hesitate to book your stay well in advance!

Arrival to the area is easily done by air trough the airport in Jerez or the airport in Malaga.

You can fly to Jerez (airport code: XRY) with a regular airline as well as low fare company, Ryanair (from London and Frankfurt). If you arrive at Jerez it is easy to catch the train to San Fernando (~1 hour) and then catch the bus to Conil de la Frontera (~1 hour).

If you can't find a flight to Jerez, flying to Malaga (airport code: AGP) can be a good alternative. Malaga is a major flight destination from many European cities, and is served by several international airlines, and the low fare company Ryanair. From Malaga airport you can either take the train to San Fernando or a bus straight to Conil de la Frontera (~4 hour).

Conil is also well connected by bus with the city of Cadiz and Sevilla.

The best day for beginners to arrive is Sunday, to be in synch with the weekly surf lesson plan.

Once your booking is secured the local surf camp manager will help you out with all the details regarding your arrival.

I really enjoyed my surfing lessons, it was just a shame that the weather wasn't very nice! Male, age 40, from United Kingdom

I had expected a more typical surf camp set up with bunk house near beach, but the flat in town was nice and local beaches were great. Male, age 32, from United Kingdom
